Eratóstenes from Cirene

On the next page you will see an interesting video about the first measurement of the globe by Eratóstenes de Cirene. Although it may be difficult to understand, this video could be used with 1st or 2nd year ESO students to better understand the measurement concepts.

Although it may be complex, we could also show it to students in the third cycle of primary school in an introductory manner.

It is also an interdisciplinary content, where history and mathematics are intertwined. In this way it can be more striking for the student since it is a quite complex problem for that time without so many technological advances.

On the other hand, the following didactic proposal is offered:
1. Watching the video.
2. Search in the network of subsequent measurements and how they were carried out.
3. Select the best type of measurement and perform calculations in an estimated manner.

This can be done in a group or individual way and would not occupy more than one or two sessions. In this sense it can be an interesting activity to carry out in the classroom.

Contents of two subjects are worked in addition to concepts such as estimation and approximate calculation of certain measures.

Here I leave the link to the video. Enjoy it!
